There is much going on this upcoming weekend. We'll be at
the Olde Timey Days in Burnsville this Saturday, talking about the War in Yancey County. Please drop by and
see us.
This Sunday, we are participating in a tour at the site of
Childsville/Calhoun in southern Avery County. Childsville/Calhoun was the first
seat of the newly created Mitchell County in 1861. It is also the site of the
grave of Robert Sevier, who was mortally wounded during the battle of Kings
Mountain in 1781. This site is on private property, and is almost never open to
the public. Since it is the 100th Anniversary of the creation of Avery County,
and the 150th Anniversary of Mitchell County, the owners made an exception.
Tours start at 2:00 pm.
