Family stories place the Home Guard in Burke County, where they hanged a family cousin, a Confederate Deserter, Pvt James Monroe Hudson on July 10, 1862. Official records state that he had died of unknown causes. His Brother-in-law Joseph Riley Watts was shot and killed in front of his home in the presence of his wife and small children by the Home Guard the same summer for not abiding by the conscription act. No records of this can be found but it has left an indelible mark to the family history. The more that know this the quicker this business will come to a swift termination. As the reconciliation monument is close to where some of my ancestors are buried, I tend to take this more personally. People need to understand what the goal is with this current administration and that’s to Erase America. Recommend reading the book of the same title by James Robbins. It was ordered abandoned after the Battle of Shiloh to keep from getting surrounded by advancing Federals. When the Confederates withdrew, the siege guns there were shipped to Vicksburg.
para 6 -- the Naval Battle of Memphis was the largest inland naval engagement in world history. Also, the CS fleet was commanded by JOSEPH Edward Montgomery, NOT the unrelated James E. Montgomery, who was a different captain, still in New Orleans. The confusion arises because both signed their names as J. E. Montgomery.
line 7: "four others fell into Confederate hands." I know that you meant "Union" hands. But these 4 Cottonclads, damaged in the battle, were run aground on the Ark shore and the crews escaped.
line 8: "Arkansas was towed...." just for geographical clarity you might say was "towed towards Vicksburg to the Yazoo River...."
Para 8 -- yes, Memphis became a huge supply depot for the Federals, and also, due to extensive smuggling, continued as a supply depot for the South, with medicines, munitions, and arms being sent to the Confederates.
line 7: "and larger sales operations." I'm sure you meant "and large-scale operations."

Thanks.
Lee Millar, historian
Gen. I'm thinking it was probably during the latter part of the war. David Silver my Great, my great grandfather (Charlie Silvers's brother) served with the NC 6th early war then the 58th after 1863. His brother Sam was an officer as well and probably got him transferred from the 6th. The old heads that I worked with on the Clinchfield told me that; “We were down for about a month”. Pre-wartime rail freight traffic was rebounding from the lows experienced during the Great Depression, and the Clinchfield was keen to make hurried repairs to the roadbed and right of way. Operations after the flood of 1940 rebounded rapidly. The damage of the flood of 1940 was nearly a rivaled by the damage experienced by the Clinchfield by the flood of November 1977. - Mike Hopson.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37006595.post-81625314805498248772023-04-14T11:20:52.595-04:002023-04-14T11:20:52.595-04:00The flood in 1940 was in August, not July.

I’d previously considered whether this was the same Louis de Bebian Mary Lincoln wrote of, but dimissed the idea because this one had several adult children who begged for his release after he was imprisoned at Fort Lafayette. Louis was not among them, but ancestry records confirm this was indeed his father and siblings. (The date of death of the elder Louis de Bebian is incorrect at the linked record; others are not publicly accessible. It appears that their ancestry traces back to France, including the Pau region, and that one ancestor was a pioneer in the eduation of deaf students.) Perhaps the younger Louis didn’t want to call suspicion onto himself and jeopardize his own business, so he let his sisters make the case.

In 1861, the elder Louis was living in North Carolina and engaging in maritime commerce, which meant the Union blockade was a problem for him. He probably tried to evade it for the purposes of making money, and also to take letters from associates North Carolina into the North. (It appears his adult children all lived in NYC).Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04226069770120712820noreply@blogger.com
